About John Butler

Drawing has always been something I love to do. I grew up in a small cottage with a large, wild garden, and so it wasn’t surprising that I drew the animals and birds that I saw. I still like going to wild places, although these days I tend to go a little further than my back garden in Kent, South East England. The wilder the better, from Scottish mountains to African plains.

As an illustrator I have worked for a variety of people. The Sesame Street workshop in New York, Time magazine and advertising agencies in various parts of the world. I was illustrating wildlife sculptures in Oman when Kuwait was invaded.

The first work I did as a freelance illustrator was the cover of a collection of short stories by Dylan Thomas for Penguin Books nearly thirty years ago. I illustrated my first children’s book in 1979. Since then I have illustrated around 40 more and I have written a quarter of those. I feel very privileged to be able to spend my time creating books for children.
